Whether the love counts or can be trusted, one may never know. But you act on it, you fight, trust and keep your fingers crossed, regardless. Democracy is an excruciating, poetic and sinuous labour of love - one person's vote is an actual act of engagement and a symbolic pact of hope. One must believe that his or her one vote counts"

Now,I do not openly support any political parties and I probably never really will. This Saturday will be my first time voting and how exactly will I come to a decision?Let's make it simple. I am comfortable where I am now.I am able to get an education.I can walk the streets without fear of bombings. My friends who have graduated are able to get good jobs. I am contented with the way things are run now. Do I have faith that if other people were to take charge instead, would they do a better job? No.So that is how I will vote.

What do I know of politics?Nothing.I have no idea of how things are run, regardless of the numerous legislations and procedures to follow but what really goes on up there,I really don't know. Basically what most people have (especially during election time) are just stories being passed from mouth to mouth, and we all know what happens in a game of Chinese Whispers. Fact of the matter is, the situation can get down and dirty. And I will never really know what is real and what is not. Even the voting system is put under the microscope and scrutinized from every aspect. It's a flawed system, but I think they've handled it the best they can. The Election Commission consists of a bunch of people, and just like us,they're prone to mistakes. I read an article about how Malaysians are denied the rights to vote fairly and with justice.Hmm.Truth be told, from what I can see, they are given the right to vote. It's just a matter of whether they want to or not. Some of them did not even register although they are way past the eligible age of voting. So what's the story morning glory?

I do believe in the voting system, and as rational, logical and mature thinking rakyats we are, we should express our feelings through our votes. Not by tearing down or vandalising the posters of those who we do not support. There are always chances of a new government or new faces ruling the country. If there is,then I shall welcome them with open arms.Change is always good. That's the whole point of the voting system.Voice out your opinions there.By forever harping on how screwed up the whole system is,how do we expect to change anything? What makes you think, that in the hands of other people, the system would be better than it is? It's all about thinking things through and analyzing what's good for you, your loved ones and your country.

Till then, Happy Voting Malaysia!

how relevant is freedom of speech in our community today?

freedom of speech (FOS) is forever an issue with several communities around the world.some demand for it,others think it is a recipe for disaster.unfortunately, FOS is not something we can measure or control easily.Even looking up for the meaning of FOS offers thousands of different perspectives, each with its own definition of what it is,the philosophy behind it,and how it is expressed.I define FOS as the freedom to speak your mind, what you think, whatever, with no restrictions whatsoever.FOS in my perspective is being able to say anything i want, for instance,in this blog, without worrying about red-tapes and restrictions so that the public will be able to read everything I am saying and be able to respond in a way they want to.And in a way,I already have my FOS right, noone's telling me to stop it or slap me with an arrest or anything like that right? That's what I mean by how broad the definition of FOS can be,it just depends on how you apply it to the situation I guess. Some might also relate FOS to freedom of expression (FOE) as they are closely related and often used in the same context.Independent newspapers demand their rights to FOS as their publication is controlled politically by the governing party. They demand that the laws pertaining to FOS be amended, if not taken out altogether,so that they are allowed to publish their independent views. Now,for FOS right,it no longer becomes FOS when you control it right? So,when it says FOS is allowed, then there should be no rules, regulations or law for it should it?Because then FOS is given but not after making the speech.Get what I'm saying? So, how relevant is FOS in our society today?Given the peaceful conditions we are living in, it is important to maintain that so there is no way FOS is to be allowed because it can promote uncertainty, anger, instability etc if certain sensitive issues are to be released to the public.Back in the hey-days of activism (you know, everyone was a hippie ,smoked weed and joined demonstrations) it was all about FOS back then.We demanded for our rights and exclaimed our disagreements with how things are back then. But now,is FOS really relevant?what do we hope to achieve with FOS now?is FOS now the same as it used to be before?

MAKE TRADE FAIR

<strong style="font-weight: bold; Using less energy not only helps the planet, but also saves money on household bills.Turning the heating thermostat down, and the air conditioning up, by 1.5°C (3°F) saves around 1 tonnes of CO2 (carbon dioxide) a year. An energy-efficiency refrigerator could save nearly half a tonne of CO2 a year, compared with an older model. Insulating windows, doors, and electrical outlets and adding more insulation to the attic and basement reduces energy consumption.Compact fluorescent, spiral light bulbs are 75% more efficient than standard light bulbs

Energy Savings on the Road
Walking, cycling, using a car pool or taking public transport, all produce fewer emissions than those emitted by a single person in a car.Choosing the most efficient car available, such as a hybrid gasoline-electric model, and keeping any car well maintained, will reduce emissions.Sharing a car and avoiding short journeys by car, saves energy.Keeping tires optimally inflated uses less fuel and cuts down emissions.Driving at 5 mph below the speed limit over an 8-mile commute to work saves 350 kg of CO2 per year.

Reducing Garbage
On average a person throws away 10 times his or her bodyweight in rubbish per year. One kilogram sent to landfill produces 2 kg of methane. The simplest way of reducing this burden is to buy and waste less unnecessary packaging.Recycling paper, glass, aluminum, steel and other materials to produce "new" materials, can make energy savings. Using both sides of the paper and recycling it can save 2.5 kg of greenhouse gases for every kilogram of paper used.

Becoming Carbon Neutral
After reducing emissions as much as possible, people become carbon neutral by "offsetting" the rest. They purchase "carbon credits" to channel their money into projects leading to a reduction in emissions. With details of the activity or fuel use to be offset, the organization calculates how many carbon credits need to be bought. Cost of credits varies, but is around $10/£7.50 per tonne of CO2.

Advocating Change
Individuals can encourage larger communities to act on climate change. For example:
• Workplaces and schools: encourage co-workers or fellow students to adopt strategies that reduce missions;
• Companies and governing bodies: lobby management to invest in energy conservation measures, or renewable energy;
• Pressure groups and local government representatives: advocate local action. See Cities for Climate Protection programme: www.iclei.org/co2/;
• Corporations: encourage evaluation of their contributions to the greenhouse effect and point them to the many success stories and available toolkits;
• Government: lobby ministers to take actions to reduce emissions and plan adaptation options.

Source: The Atlas of Climate Change – Mapping the World’s Greatest Challenge

"The day's agenda is to give a human face to environmental issues; empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development; promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues; and advocate partnership, which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and more prosperous future. World Environment Day is a people's event with colourful activities such as street rallies, bicycle parades, green concerts, essays and poster competitions in schools, tree planting, as well as recycling and clean-up campaigns."

31st May 2007 - World No Tobacco Day

Tobacco is the second major cause of death in the world. It is well known that half the people who smoke regularly today – about 650 million people – will eventually be killed by tobacco. Equally alarming is the fact that hundreds of thousands of people who have never smoked die each year from diseases caused by breathing second-hand tobacco smoke - taken from <span lights up the cigarette or stub it out.Even if you love smoking so much, then think of the loved ones around you.Girlfriend,wife,daughter...because of you they've become smokers too.Noone can force anyone to do anything cause it's all about choice. So choose to put out that cigarette ;p

Will Sanctions End the Darfur Killing?

"Despite the sanctions announced Tuesday by President Bush, the coming months will see more horrifying news of massacres from Darfur, more wrenching refugee tales, more urgent calls for action".Won't sanctions make it worse for the people in Sudan?Shouldn't the international community give aid to Sudan instead of cornering them and potentially worsening the conditions there?Humanitarian conditions are worsening there,is placing a sanction really going to help Sudan in any way at all?I guess it is one way to control the violence taking place there but the Sudan people are already deprived of so many things, and the innocent are usually the victim here.Even with sanctions, the rebels would find ways to get firearm supplies easily if they wanted to.It's the people of Sudan that should be the main concern. The innocent men, women, children who just happened to be stuck smack in the middle of everything. The international community should instead work harder to help out with the peace agreements,if we really do want to help out.Violence sure as heck does not solve anything, and the examples are still here for us to see (Iraq.duh) Sure, discussions have long been going on and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere but that's the thing,if for once, just for once,we were to think of the welfare of the country actually in the deepest part of the muck, anything is achieveable. It's wishful thinking but can actually be reality if we only stop thinking about gaining profit for ourselves and for once, think of the people of Sudan, who by right, should have all the say in this thing.Their voices can't be heard, and they are the victims of the situation.Think of them, and not of ourselves.Save Darfur, but also respect their independence.Help them, but don't expect anything in return.Give aid,not create more violence. They've suffered enough.

*all />
DOWNLOAD: Policy Talking Points (Updated 3/30/07)Darfur has been embroiled in a deadly conflict for over three years. At least 400,000 people…
How did the conflict start?

The conflict began in the arid and impoverished region early in 2003 after a rebel group began attacking government targets, saying the region was being neglected by Khartoum.
The rebels say the government is oppressing black Africans in favour of Arabs.
Darfur, which means land of the Fur, has faced many years of tension over land and grazing rights between the mostly nomadic Arabs, and farmers from the Fur, Massaleet and Zagawa communities.
There are two main rebel groups, the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) and the Justice and Equality Movement (Jem), although the peace talks were complicated by splits in both groups, some along ethnic lines.
The groups opposed to May 2006 peace deal with the government have now merged into the National Redemption Front led by former Darfur governor Ahmed Diraige.

What is the government doing?

It admits mobilising "self-defence militias" following rebel attacks but denies any links to the Janjaweed, accused of trying to "cleanse" black Africans from large swathes of territory.
Refugees from Darfur say that following air raids by government aircraft, the Janjaweed ride into villages on horses and camels, slaughtering men, raping women and stealing whatever they can find.
Many women report being abducted by the Janjaweed and held as sex slaves for more than a week before being released.
The US and some human rights groups say that genocide is taking place - though a UN investigation team sent to Sudan said that while war crimes had been committed, there had been no intent to commit genocide.
Sudan's government denies being in control of the Janjaweed and President Omar al-Bashir has called them "thieves and gangsters".
After strong international pressure and the threat of sanctions, the government promised to disarm the Janjaweed. But so far there is little evidence this has happened.
Trials have been announced in Khartoum of some members of the security forces suspected of abuses - but this is viewed as part of a campaign against UN-backed attempts to get some 50 key suspects tried at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
What has happened to Darfur's civilians?
Millions have fled their destroyed villages, with many heading for camps near Darfur's main towns. But there is not enough food, water or medicine.
The Janjaweed patrol outside the camps and Darfurians say the men are killed and the women raped if they venture too far in search of firewood or water.

The Janjaweed are accused of 'ethnic cleansing'Some 200,000 have also sought safety in neighbouring Chad, but many of these are camped along a 600km stretch of the border and remain vulnerable to attacks from Sudan.
The refugees are also threatened by the diplomatic fallout between Chad and Sudan as the neighbours accuse one another of supporting each other's rebel groups.
Chad's eastern areas have a similar ethnic make-up to Darfur.
Many aid agencies are working in Darfur but they are unable to get access to vast areas because of the fighting.

How many have died?

With much of Darfur inaccessible to aid workers and researchers, calculating how many deaths there have been in the past three years is impossible.
What researchers have done is to estimate the deaths based on surveys in areas they can reach.
The latest research published in September 2006 in the journal Science puts the numbers of deaths above and beyond those that would normally die in this inhospitable area at "no fewer than 200,000".
The US researchers say that their figures are the most compelling and persuasive estimate to date. They have made no distinction between those dying as a result of violence and those dying as a result of starvation or disease in refugee camps.
Accurate figures are crucial in determining whether the deaths in Darfur are genocide or - as the Sudanese government says - the situation is being exaggerated.

What happened to the peace deal?

SLA leader Minni Minawi, who signed the May peace deal, was given a large budget, but his fighters have already been accused by Amnesty International of abuses against people in areas opposed to the peace deal.
The smaller SLA faction and Jem did not sign the deal.
There has been a dramatic increase in violence and displacement since the deal was signed.
With the peace deal looking unworkable and amid fears of renewed "all-out war", there appears little prospect of people returning to their villages for some time yet.

Is anyone trying to stop the fighting?

About 7,000 African Union troops have slowly been deployed in Darfur on a very limited mandate.
Experts say the soldiers are too few to cover an area the size of France, and the African Union says it does not have the money to fund the operation for much longer.
Sudan has resisted strong western diplomatic pressure for the UN to take control of the peacekeeping mission. The latest plan envisages a more than doubling of numbers and a hybrid force with much greater UN involvement but at present Sudan says it will allow just 3,000 extra troops.
In April 2006, the UN Security Council passed a resolution imposing sanctions against four Sudanese nationals accused of war crimes in Darfur that include two rebel leaders, a former air force chief, and a Janjaweed militia leader.
A dossier of evidence compiled by a UN commission has also been passed to the ICC in The Hague, along with the names of top war crimes suspects.

Will sanctions be imposed?

The US and the UK have long threatened international sanctions against Sudan, unless it agrees to having more UN peacekeepers in Darfur.
But such threats have so far achieved little, as Sudan's allies Russia and China have used their veto in the UN Security Council to block tough resolutions.
The US imposed sanctions on Sudan in 1997 because of its previous ties to Osama Bin Laden. color: rgb(51, 204, 0);" class="story">The idea of recycling has always appealed to me as it offers a solution to the answer of where does all the rubbish go.I mean,i look at the amount of plastic rubbish alone i generate in a day and i shudder.Times that with the whole population of Malaysia, not to mention the whole world and its like wowhh. It's just amazing the amount of non-biodegradable rubbish we produce. So why not recycle? It is for our own good right?I applaud malls which have recycling bins like Ikano Power Centre in Damansara. It actually encourages consumers to practice recycling, even if it's only in the mall but hey, that's a start right? But sometimes there are irresponsible people who do not throw the types of rubbish into their respective bins.I don't know why but i guess not everything can go perfectly.Which comes back to the main question. Why can't our country be more serious in handling our rubbish?I mean, the decreasing amount of space to chuck them away had some people worried a few years back, and i heard about trips being made to countries who successfully carry out their recycling programs. Then nothing.Nada.Nyet.What happened? Is it still in progress? What's going on?A friend says that it's takes a lot of time, cost, technology to start this whole recycling thing but what are we waiting for?Till we finally run out of space and grounds to dig,or till our rivers or lakes or oceans becomes a dumping ground (It is already isn't it?) I mean ,yeah,it's easy to talk about it and all but to carry it out takes a lot more and that is exactly what we don't have. We've achieved so much and yet we still have doubts about doing things that would actually benefit us.Is it because recycling takes too much effort and we can't really gain any profit from it that we think that it is not a worthwhile cause to fight for?For me,i think that recycling is a brilliant idea and if only we are encouraged to recycle more, and also provided with the facilities and also the knowledge, well, wouldn't it be a better world? :) I'm trying it out and mind you i'm not an expert on the subject. In fact,i'm still having trouble identifying a proper recycling center but i don't think that should stop me.Till then, lets try this recycling thing.Once we get used to it it'll probably be a breeze ;p

http://www.kitarsemula.com/RecyclingCentre.asp (it's a dead link!anyone has any suggestions as to where we can check out our nearest recycling center, other information about recycling etc.thanx!) this might be something worth looking into : http://www.reach.org.my/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=22&Itemid=47 (

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall...

New love-our-river campaign

JOHOR BARU: The 15-year-old “Love Our River” campaign has been declared a failure but there are plans to launch a new RM10mil campaign to educate the public about protecting rivers in the country.

http://www.thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2007/4/25/nation/17541919&sec=nation
(Wednesday, April 25th 2007)

Let's hope it will be a well-spent 10mil.....

Why Walls Don't Work in Baghdad

Residents walk past a concrete wall on a street in Adhamiya district in Baghdad April 22, 2007. type='text'>see see??!! don't be litterbugs people!!

Rubbish in rivers force water treatment plants to shut down temporarily

CHERAS: Water treatment plants are being forced to temporarily shut down, up to 18 times a year, as a result of effluents and rubbish being dumped into rivers.
Puncak Niaga Sdn Bhd (PNSB) managing director Datuk Mat Lasa Hitam said the company's shut down of several water treatment plants last year resulted in a total water production loss of 30,000 cubic metres.
PNSB operates 33 water treatment plants in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, four of which are operated by water concessionaires Konsortium Abass Sdn Bhd and Splash Sdn Bhd.
Shutting down the plants adversely affects residents when the volume of clean water produced does not meet demand.
"For this year, until April, we had been forced to temporarily close several of our plants nine times, resulting in water production loss of 34,000 cubic metres.
"Such plant closures are caused by wanton dumping of rubbish and fluids into our rivers, in addition to other factors such as oil spillage, high ammonia levels and even the stench of nearby rubbish disposal areas.
"For example, PNSB plants in Bukit Tampoi, Cheras and Salak Tinggi were closed due to high ammonia levels in the water.
"The Gombak plant was closed as a result of diesel spillage caused by an overturned vehicle on the highway where the river runs through," he said.
He also added that a new water treatment procedure using membrane technology in an ultra-filtration process was undergoing a test-pilot project in the Kepong and Sungai Rumput plants to develop more conducive filtration procedures.
Mat Lasa, who earlier read out a speech on behalf of PNSB executive chairman Tan Sri Rozali Ismail during the launch of PNSB's 20th River Rescue Brigade (RRB) here, added that it was important to educate society on preserving our rivers.
The event on Thursday was aimed at inculcating knowledge among the young on the effects of river pollution, water cycle, water treatment process, water quality and wise water usage.
More than 160 students aged between 10 to 11 from SK Dusun Nanding, SK Lubok Kelubi, SJK (T) Kajang and SJK (C) Cheras were selected to join the RRB.
Fomca president N. Marimuthu, who opened the event said it was important to educate them from young so they could spread the message to their parents and peers of the importance of river-cleanliness.

www.thestar.com.my What does being Korean or Asian have anything to do with Cho Seung-Hui's actions?I really don't see a need to bring up this issue. His actions were his alone, they do not represent a country or a region or anything else. And i don't think psycho analysing his actions would help much either.I mean,it's done and over with.Actions needed to be taken to beef up security in the campus (but really,to what extent) It just goes to show how unpredictable people can get,and really, what defense is there against that? Not all Asians,North Koreans, or English literature people will suddenly pick up a gun one day and decide to just shoot some people.

I was discussing it with my room-mate and she said why don't they stop people with mental problems from being out in public so that things like people going amok or stuff like that won't happen.Well, that wouldn't really be fair would it?I mean, first of all,how do you tell if someone actually had mental problems? And how do we measure the level of 'craziness' that person has? Some could be totally harmless and some could be really dangerous. And does it take mental problems to actually drive someone over the edge?A person can be rational one minute and snap in the next. And people with mental problems needs to be treated just the same as everyone else.

It's an endless debate, when issues arise from an action of this kind.We can talk about it,till we feel that we've come to a solution. But is there, really,a solution?I mean, who can fathom the human mind?Who really knows what was going on in the killer's mind?He could be trying to prove a point, make a statement. What?Beats me.We are,by far,the most unpredictable and dangerous creature to ever exist and who knows what anyone of us will do tomorrow.

will it only end when every single iraqi citizen is wiped out?

Bombs kill nearly 200 in Baghdad after PM's pledge

By Dean Yates and Paul Tait
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Car bombs killed nearly 200 people in Baghdad on Wednesday in the deadliest attacks since U.S. and Iraqi forces launched a security crackdown aimed at halting the country's slide into civil war.
One car bomb alone in the mainly Shi'ite Sadriya neighbourhood killed 140 people and wounded 150, police said, making it the worst single insurgent bomb attack in Baghdad since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5054875796267660210" style="FLOAT: left; Let him come and see what is happening here."
Maliki is under growing pressure to say when foreign soldiers will leave, but the attacks in mainly Shi'ite areas of Baghdad underscored the huge challenges for Iraq's security forces in taking charge of overall security from more than 150,000 U.S. and British troops.
U.S. and Iraqi forces began deploying thousands more troops on Baghdad's streets in February.
Sectarian death squad killings have declined, but car bombs are much harder to stop, U.S. military officials say.
The bombings could inflame sectarian passions in Baghdad, especially among the Mehdi Army militia of anti-American Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, which has kept a low profile so far during the two-month-old Baghdad security offensive.
Al Qaeda is blamed for most of the major bombings targeting Shi'ites in Iraq and there are fears the Mehdi Army may take to the streets to retaliate.

www.thestar.com.my (Thursday, 19th april 2007)

When will it end?

Sharifah Mazlina makes it to top of North Pole
By Manjit Kaurmanjit@thestar.com.my
SVALBARD (Norway): Polar explorer Datin Paduka Sharifah Mazlina Syed Abdul Kadir has made it to the “top of the world.”
She reached her destination at 90 degrees North at 2.45pm (8.25pm Malaysian time) in a day of clear sunny skies, according to a report posted on her website last night.
“I am here. Thank you everyone for your prayers and support; this is for all of us Malaysians. Greetings from the North Pole!'' she said in remarks carried on her website www.sharifahpole2pole.com.
It was the culmination of the 42-year-old lecturer's one-and-a-half years of preparation and hard work to reach the top of the North Pole.
<img her treks through the ice before reaching the North Pole yesterday. — Picture taken from her website.Despite enduring bad weather over the last 10 days and having to cross difficult terrain, Sharifah Mazlina surmounted the odds to put the country on the polar map.
Several of her fans posted congratulatory messages on her website.
Sharifah Mazlina, who is the first Asian woman to complete the Pole-to-Pole mission, left for Norway on April 3.
In April 2004, she was the first Asian woman to reach the South Pole.
Earlier reports on her website yesterday stated that good weather and a smooth surface provided her with an easy trek.
“I plan to start early and hope to reach the finishing line during midday so that I can proceed to go back to the Borneo Base camp,” she had said earlier.
“Today’s (yesterday's) journey was full of ice cracks but I managed to pull it through by walking 13km without any drifting and not pressurising both my feet,” she added.
Sharifah Mazlina had been using a Global Positioning System device to record her movement and location, and carried a revolver for safety reasons.
The explorer's achievement also caps a proud moment for Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who is the patron of the North Pole Expedition Pole-to-Pole Mission 2006/07. type='text'>hello

hello.
i do not have a solid concrete reason why i wanted to start this blog but maybe i'm hoping to just obtain the reasons as i go along.so this is where i will be posting things that get my attention, mainly to highlight certain issues which i think needs to be spread around.i guess one of the things that i hope i am able to do is create awareness, since that is the only thing i am able to do right now.whether anyone actually reads this,is well, not really my concern.this blog is just a place for me to voice out my opinion and well, rant on and on about how i'm an activist wannabe and all.if you ask me what kind of activist it is i want to be,well, seriously,i don't know.that is why i am a wannabe.i mean,i want to fight for human rights,no wars, the environment, abuse against animals etc. but in order to be a full-fledged activist i guess you need to focus and i just haven't found that focus yet so maybe this blog will help me find my focus.hehe.and i guess this blog also helps me to compile the various links which i find interesting to look at in achieving my activist-ness.so,good luck to me and thank you to you who is reading this

ok.1st up i guess i'll talk about the power of the internet.recently,i've been reading the TIME magazine (december 25,2006-january 1,2007) and one of the issues they were talking about was how much YouTube has changed our lives.and also blogs.people are able to express their minds and amateurs are putting up videos that actually affects politicians' lives.it is an undeniable fact that the web (or known as Web 2.0-made up of ordinary people, people adding their voice to the Web's great evolving conversation-TIME) has such an influence on people's lives.so why not use that influence to spread news or our own take of things, you never know who is reading them.so here is my take on things.feel free to comment and to say what's on your minds.till then, peace y'all (*waving a peace sign*) ps: how activist-ty is that ;p
<img width='1' height='1'
